How fragile life can be...

I am sitting here at Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler watching my dad with his cute bald head (the only thing visible under the blankets) sleep. He has been in the hospital since Sunday with an unknown infection. It's been strange 'parenting' him and taking care of him. He is so weak and never completely comfortable. I've felt so helpless during this whole process that it has been good for me to be here just so that I can actually DO something for him.

The doctor came in today while I was here. She is almost positive that the infection is caused by strep or staff, although the cultures still haven't come back. She doesn't want him to go home yet with his hand still being inflamed. She also said he'll need to be on antibiotics for about 2 weeks. (Once he gets out of the hospital, he'll be on oral antibiotics.) She didn't seem concerned at how long it was taking for the infection to go away, and with that the coming and going of the fever, so that was reassuring.

I am hoping that this is the biggest battle he'll have to face while he is going through chemo. He still has 3 more rounds to go and each round is harder on his system. I know he will come out of this just fine and cancer free, but watching him go through this has been really difficult.

I plan on leaving this afternoon to head back to San Antonio trusting that he will beat this infection and get out of here soon.
